What this is

One Word Japan publishes short videos that each explain a single Japanese word. A video shows the word in Japanese, then explains its meaning, nuance, and the culture behind it in English.

Why we made it

Japan is a culture that says the most with the least. A single word — wabi, yūgen, mono no aware — can hold an entire philosophy. This site and the channel exist to share those words with a wider audience.

About the logo

The official logo combines three elements: the Japanese character 和 (wa — harmony), an ensō circle (a Zen symbol of wholeness and calm), and a sakura blossom. The mark identifies the One Word Japan brand across this site and the channel.
